My old remarkable friend, Al McGowan: When I learned through the grapevine that Al had passed away, not long AFTER his combat tours in Vietnam, I was greatly taken back. A guy could not have had a better, more noble and loyal friend during our Senior year. He had a pristine heart of 'Gold'. With little comparison Al was the kindest and most understanding friend during that, 'never to be forgotten', time period from 1963 to 1964; and the guy was just such a pleasure to be around. He always had a way of making you feel better about things that happened in Life. He always had something good and positive to say about things, and appeared to have an inherent knowledge about people and life far beyond his years. What a great loss, so early in life, to his friends, and to the world he might have made better just by his presence, kindness and stewardship.
Indeed, my beneficent Friend; may God have a special Mansion for you, encompassing the Love and Kindness you gave to so many others.
Al and I became close friends after we graduated. In the summer of 65, Al, Bart Brown, and I spent many Sundays at the shore. When Al found out I was going into the army, he offered to take care of my wife and daughter if i didn't make it back. God bless you Al.
Al wrote and told me that he had lymphocytic leukemia, which is what he died from. I'm sure his parents knew how he got it. He told me about the defoiant he handled regularly, in 55 gallon drums, which got rid of foliage by the next day after spraying it.
